How to Raise Your Paydex Score: A Step by Step Plan

A practical plan to increase your Paydex score: fix company details, add vendors that report, pay early, and keep errors off your Dun & Bradstreet file.

A low Paydex score can feel like a locked door. Suppliers hesitate, funders ask more questions, and you may not even know why. The good news is that the Paydex score is built from a short list of things you can actually work on. This plan walks through them in the order I recommend to business owners.

If you are new to the score itself, start with our complete Paydex score guide and come back here.

Step 1: Find out where you stand

You cannot raise a score you have not seen. Start by looking at your Dun & Bradstreet file and answer three questions:

  • Do you have a Paydex score at all, or does it say there is not enough information?
  • How many trade experiences are on file, and from how many vendors?
  • Are any payments shown as late, and do you recognize them?

If you have no score, your problem is a thin file, not a bad one. The fix is different, and our guide to thin business credit files covers it. If you have a low score, keep reading.

Step 2: Fix your company details first

This step surprises people, but it often matters most. If your business name, address or phone number on your Dun & Bradstreet file does not match what vendors use, their reports may land on a different file or not match up at all. Your good payments end up somewhere you cannot see them.

Check these details against your state filing and your website:

DetailWhere to compare
Legal business nameState filing, bank account, invoices
DBA or trade nameState or county filing, website
Street addressState filing, utility bills, website
Phone numberWebsite, Google listing, invoices
IndustryWhat you actually do day to day

If anything is off, update it before you do anything else. Read business credit mismatches for the full list of what to check.

Step 3: Make sure your vendors report

Your Paydex score only sees vendors that report to Dun & Bradstreet. Make a list of every supplier you buy from on terms and ask each one:

  1. Do you report payment history to a business credit bureau?
  2. Which bureaus do you report to?
  3. How often do you report?
  4. What business name and address do you report under?

You may find that your biggest suppliers do not report at all. That is common. It does not mean you should drop them, but it does mean you need some accounts that do report.

Step 4: Add the right reporting accounts

If your file is light, add a few vendor accounts that report to Dun & Bradstreet. Good choices are suppliers you will genuinely use, such as office supplies, shipping, packaging, uniforms or industry materials. Buying things you need and paying on time builds real history.

A few tips:

  • Start with a small number of accounts you can manage well.
  • Make real purchases. An account with no activity does not create payment history.
  • Use the exact legal name and address that is on your business credit file.

Step 5: Pay by the due date, or before

The Paydex score is about timing. Paying by the due date supports a score of 80. Paying before the due date can move you higher. Because the score is dollar weighted, your largest invoices matter most.

Practical habits that help:

  • Set calendar reminders a week before each due date.
  • Pay your largest invoices first and earliest.
  • Do not let small invoices slide. A string of small late payments still adds up.
  • If cash is tight, talk to the vendor before the due date instead of after.

Step 6: Clean up late payments that are wrong

Sometimes a payment shows as late when it was not. The vendor may have posted it late, applied it to the wrong invoice, or reported under a different account. If you see a late payment you do not recognize or that you paid on time:

  1. Gather your proof, such as bank records, receipts and the invoice.
  2. Contact the vendor and ask them to correct what they report.
  3. Ask the bureau to update information that is inaccurate.

Accurate information is the goal. Real late payments stay on file, which is why steady on-time habits matter so much going forward.

Step 7: Keep watching

Once your score starts moving, protect it. New vendors, address changes and reporting mistakes can all change your file without warning. Business credit monitoring helps you see changes as they happen, so a small problem does not turn into a declined application.

What not to do

  • Do not open a long list of accounts at once. More accounts you cannot manage can lead to late payments.
  • Do not change your address or name without updating your file. That is how mismatches start.
  • Do not assume your bank or credit card builds your Paydex score. It is built from vendor trade payments.
  • Do not pay for accounts you will never use. Real purchases paid on time are what count.

A 90 day Paydex action plan

WhenWhat to do
Week 1Review your Dun & Bradstreet file and note your score and trade experiences
Week 1 to 2Fix your legal name, address, phone and industry details
Week 2Ask your current vendors whether they report
Week 2 to 3Open a few reporting vendor accounts you will actually use
Month 1 to 3Make real purchases and pay every invoice by the due date or earlier
OngoingMonitor your file and fix errors as soon as you see them

Results vary by business, and how fast your score changes depends on how often your vendors report. But this is the same foundation that every strong Paydex score is built on.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to raise a Paydex score?

It depends on how often your vendors report and how many reporting accounts you have. Because vendors usually report monthly, most businesses need a few billing cycles before a change shows up.

Will paying early raise my Paydex score?

Paying early is one of the main ways a Paydex score rises above 80, because the score rewards payment before the due date. The size of each invoice also matters, since the score is dollar weighted.

Can I ask my vendors to report to Dun & Bradstreet?

Yes. Some vendors report automatically and some only report if they are part of a reporting program. It is fair to ask a supplier whether they report and to which bureau.

Can a wrong late payment be fixed?

If a vendor reported a payment late by mistake, the vendor can correct what it reports, and businesses can ask the bureau to update inaccurate information, usually with supporting documents.
